This session lead by Barbara Epstein (creator/ director/ choreographer) of A -5678!, will focus on the development process of a theatre musical. She will share the creative road taken to bring the show to its current form. At the heart of this lecture demonstration is the workshop presentation of the production combined with discussion regarding what was cut, changed, or added during the development process to bring the production to its current iteration. All ages welcome!
Barbara, has created, produced, directed and choreographed over 50 musical theatre shows all over the world for theatre, theme parks, cruise lines and corporate entertainment. She directed the UK premiere of Irving Berlin’s White Christmas and served as executive producer on two animated musical films for Nickelodeon. She was an associate producer for the Broadway productions of Rent, Avenue Q and Damn Yankees.
A-5678!, a Musical Revue, is a show-within-a-show or, to be more precise, a “show-before-a-show.” Taking place two hours before opening night and unfolding in real time, a cast of actors (ages 16-26) ready themselves for the inevitable moment when the curtain will rise.
Warming up, suffering butterflies and sharing dreams, the ensemble fortifies each other’s courage with songs that explore the life of an actor, self-confidence, “showmance,” family and friendship. Part musical revue and part reality show, this heartwarming and hilarious love letter to the world of theatre culminates with the opening number of the “show” and leaves the audience completely entertained and emotionally invested in what the future will bring for each member of the ensemble. Relatable to audiences both young and old, the show is modifiable to fit casts ranging in size from 4-24 performers. Since the actors use their real names and essentially play heightened versions of themselves, the show can be molded to fit the talents of any theatre company or educational establishment and is the perfect fit for any season.
